Job Summary: The Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences at Rutgers University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. Areas of interest include: metal isotope geochemistry, sediment geochemistry, trace metal geochemistry, paleoreconstruction of ocean anoxia. The candidate will be based in Dr. Silke Severmann’s lab on the New Brunswick campus. Additional duties include helping undergraduate students conduct independent research projects, presenting and publishing research results. Job Description: The focus of the work is an ongoing project to measure U and Cr stable isotopes in modern marine environments. These two transition metals and their isotopes find application in the reconstruction of past ocean anoxia and changes in the biological pump. The primary aim is to contribute to the calibration of these two isotope proxies and improve interpretation of their geological records. Specifically, the project seeks to provide a detailed understanding of the dominant isotope effects associated with different sedimentary sinks and their uptake mechanism. Field sampling for this project has recently been completed. The candidate will be responsible for implementing a method to analyze U and Cr isotopes in marine sediments, porewaters and seawater.

Minimum Requirements: Applicant must have a PhD in chemical oceanography, biogeochemistry, analytical chemistry or a related field. If not a US citizen or greencard holder, applicants must be eligible for a J1 visa.

Preferred Requirements: The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in (1) metal isotope analysis, (2) trace metal analytical techniques, and (3) have a strong publication record. Prior research experience in areas related to sediment geochemistry is helpful, but not essential. The candidate should have excellent oral and written English language communications skills.
