Department of Environmental Sciences (O2) was selected as coordinator of the EU project within the MSCA ITN scheme entitled “Global Mercury Observing System for the Implementation of Minamata Convention” (GMOS-Train) for the period 2020–2024. The project coordinator is the IPS Dean Prof. Dr. Milena Horvat. In this very competitive scheme the project received 100% and includes 11 European partners and participates with eminent research institutions, such as Harvard University and MIT, and other organisations, such as UN Environment, JRC Ispra and eminent NGOs. The objectives of the GMOS-TRAIN network are (1) to provide urgently needed training in mercury science within the context of the UNEP Minamata convention, and (2) to bridge key knowledge gaps on biogeochemical mercury cycling that currently hamper the optimization of national environmental policy regarding mercury emissions. Within the scope of this project 6 positions will also be available for students at the IPS.
